Victims of Pvt.Health Sector Seek Charter of Patient Rights, Affordable Rates

A group of victims of malpractices in private hospitals gathered on Tuesday in the national capital to demand the National Human Rights Commission's Charter for Patient Rights with stringent provisions to regulate rates for treatment in private health setups and a proper grievance redressal mechanism.

Around 20-25 affected families from across India shared their cases under the banner of Jan SwasthyaAbhiyan, All India Patients Rights Group, MahilaPragatiManch, People for Better Treatment, National Campaign for Right to Public Health, the Delhi network of positive people DNPplus at JantarMantar here.

Seven-year-old Adya Singh died in September 2017 after two weeks of treatment for dengue in a corporate hospital in Gurgaon. She died of medical negligence and her family was presented a bill of Rs 16 lakh.

She is not an exceptional case as similar testimonies of rampant profiteering, unaccountability, the lack of transparency prevailing in many private hospitals in India prevail.

These families, who formed a human chain to draw the attention to their plight, have been demanding regulation of rates in private hospitals’ to make patient care affordable and creation of a patient-friendly grievance redressal mechanism.
