After a family alleged severe clinical complications following a routine procedure to remove a 10-year-old boy's penile foreskin, a senior ruling party politician reportedly brokered an immediate Rs 50 lakh compensation settlement with the accused doctors, demanding payment on the spot and bypassing formal judicial channels.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly condemned this "instant justice". The association warned that settling disputes outside the law under political pressure breeds immense fear within the medical fraternity and discourages doctors from taking on complex, high-risk cases. State IMA President Dr. B. Sridhar urged that complaints be routed strictly through administrative and judicial channels, noting that allowing local political figures to dictate compensation sets a perilous precedent.

This shifting risk environment is highly relevant. When doctors operate under a cloud of legal anxiety and fear of immediate, unproven financial extortion, their clinical risk tolerance plummets. To protect themselves, doctors are forced into defensive medicine, making them deeply hesitant to adopt innovative, complex, or higher-risk therapies.
