Tamil Nadu: Doctors should not pose with patients

Doctors exposing photographs, names or personal details of patients undergoing treatment at hospitals - private or government -- will face legal action under the Tamil Nady Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, the state medical council said on Friday. "Such offences can lead to punishments including suspension from the state medical registry," said council president K Senthil.

Since January show-cause notices have been issued to five doctors from five corporate hospitals across the state, he said. "We let them go with a warning after they submitted a letter of apology," he said. The council will not accept consent from patients because most patients feel obligated to the doctors.

In the interest of giving public information, hospitals have been allowed to talk about new facilities and advanced surgical techniques in the absence of treating doctors and the patient.
