The medical fraternity must extend quality medical services to the people, treating it as a social responsibility in addition to insisting for their rights, said Superintendent of Police, A V Ranganath on Wednesday.
Speaking at a coordination meeting of members of Indian Medical Association (IMA) held at the police headquarter at Nalgonda, Ranganath said that the doctors should keep it in mind that the responsibility of reducing attacks on the hospitals by the relatives of the patients can be checked by ensuring quality health services.
He reminded that people attack doctors or medical staff when they feel there’s negligence on their part in extending treatment. “The managements of the private hospitals should also take care of quality services and accurate reports of diagnostic tests and help in avoiding attacks on the hospitals. The police too would act swiftly if this was ensured in the event of relatives of the patients resorting to dharnas or violence. In case of deaths while undrgoing treatment in the hospital, the management should take measures to shift the body from their hospital that would also reduce the severity of the issue,” he said.
He also suggested that relatives of the patients should complain to the police instead of attacking the hospital staff, if they feel the doctor or the staff erred in treating the patient.
District Medical and Health Officer Dr Kondal Rao said that medical profession was a sensitive one and the increasing number of attacks are due to lack of good relations between the doctors and patients. He also asked the managements of the private hospitals to set up boards to address the problems of patients and their relatives. The doctors should also cooperate with the police. He underlined the need for unity among the doctors.
Additional Superintendent of Police C Narmadha, IMA State executive committee member Dr Jayaprakash Reddy and IMA Neelagiri unit president Dr Pulla Rao attended the meeting.
